The SDCC Cup is almost at its conclusion and this year sees an interesting day as both Rathcoole and Colmcilles meet each other in both the Junior and Senior Finals. In just its second year of existence the SDCC Cup will be played in the fantastic surroundings of Tallaght Stadium. This reflects the growth of rugby in the area and the commitment of both Leinster Rugby and South Dublin County Council to promote the game in the area.

Rathcoole have been in the unusual situation of playing in both of the finals last year however despite this fact they were beaten by Oatlands Community College in the Senior and by Colmcilles in the Junior section last year. The pain of losing both games must be in the mind of the players and should serve to make for a great contest. Colmcilles had success in the Junior section last year but this is the first feature in the Senior final. Both teams had some very tough games in the Semi Finals with Colmcilles beating last year’s winners of the Senior Cup Oatlands and Rathcoole beating a very strong Drimnagh Castle side. In the Junior section Colmcilles overcame a Lucan C.C side that took them all the way and Rathcoole managed to edge Mac Dara’s in a hotly contested semi.

Leinster CRO for the South Dublin County Council Niall Neville commented “This will be a great day for rugby in the county. The competition has grown and levels of interest in the schools is growing all the time. All the schools that played have been invited and I hope they take up the opportunity to come down on the day. Tallaght Stadium will be a great venue for the competition and it will be great for the players to play in front of a big crowd and hear them cheering them on!”

In the week starting Monday April 16th, South Dublin County Sports Partnership is launching a countrywide series of walking programmes – Fitwalk – in local community centres. Fitwalk is a 5 week programme (1 hour per week) that shows people how to gain the maximum fitness and weight managment benefits from walking. Among the key techniques shown by the trained leader are stride walking, power walking and Nordic walking using poles. The programme is supported by the Sports Partnership and the HSE under their Get Ireland Active Initiative and costs only €10 for the 5 weeks. To book a place please contact the centres below or text your name and centre to 086 0440171. There may be other centres joing the programme in the following weeks and details of their location will be promoted in the paper and on our website www.sdcsp.ie

Monday 10-11am Perrystown Community Centre

Tuesday 10.30 – 11.30am Brookfield Youth & Community Centre

Wednesday 9-10am Tymon Bawn Community Centre

                           11-12pm Quarryvale Community Centre

                           1-2pm Ballyroan Community Centre

Thursday 10-11am St Aengus Community Centre

                           7-8pm Belgard Community Centre

Friday 9.45-10.45am Bawnogue Community Centre

After the programme the Sports Partnership, again with the support of the HSE, will be developing mapped walks in each area. These will show people measured walks so that they can then put their training programme into action and get out and walk. These flyers will be available through the community centres, health centres and other community locations as well as on the website www.sdcsp.ie We are particularly anxious that men join the walking programme as they currently walk less than women.
